How to add phone links in your flipbooks

Learn how to use call-able phone links in your publications, for easier and more effective contact with your clients.

We keep saying that Flipsnack is an all-in-one publishing tool, and we’re not kidding. You may have already used the adding links feature, but today we’re going to show you a little trick: how to add call-able phone links to your publications directly in the Design Studio. This way, your readers will be able to call your phone number with just a click.

What are phone links?

"Call-able" phone links are essentially edited hyperlinks that allow your clients to call you directly through your publication. Thus, there’s no need for another link to your contact page, making the process a lot smoother and simpler.

It’s important to know that you’ll have to upgrade your subscription plan if you want to use this feature.

Turning a link element or a hyperlink into a phone link

The process of adding a phone link to your publication is very straightforward. Go to our Design Studio in Flipsnack, and from there, you can choose to edit an existing publication or start from scratch. In either case, the next step would be to add a Link button (link element or hyperlink). Then, you just have to add the phone number in the URL space.

Whether you’re creating a new brochure or simply editing an existing one, you can use the link button and start editing it like this: insert your phone number in the URL space (e.g., tel:555 555-1234). Check out the image below to see exactly what it should look like.

For desktop users, a request will appear for Facetime or other softwares on MAC, while Windows will demand the use of WhatsApp, Skype, or other softwares set up for calls. On mobile, the call will be generated after a simple click.

Important: When you add the phone number, the field will be surrounded by a red box. This doesn’t mean that the number is incorrect.

Next, you have to change the tooltip wording to clarify what that link does (e.g., Click here to call!). This text will appear when the user hovers the mouse over the Link button.

Last but not least, make sure that the target is set to “_self" to ensure the link will open in the same frame, it was clicked on. See the example below for further clarification.

In our case, there will be a phone link generated. Depending on the device that you’re using, on click, the phone will dial the number, and on the computer, it will ring automatically. Keep in mind that for computers, you have to install or set up the software for phone calls, such as Skype or web Whatsapp.

If you want to use a hyperlink, it’s just as easy, but pay attention to setting the action to the URL, and then continue with the steps outlined above. Remember to add the term “tel:" before inserting your phone number. That’s it!
